Colored pencil drawing of animals is a beautiful and detailed technique that allows you to capture not only the appearance but also the unique expression and character of the animal. This course is designed for anyone who wants to take their skills in this technique to the next level.

Basic information

This course is suitable for both beginners and more advanced participants — for those who have never drawn with colored pencils before, as well as for those who are already refining their skills.

For beginners, the instructor will have prepared worksheets with pre-drawn outlines you can draw directly into. We’ll focus on details like the eyes, nose, tongue, and fur texture. If you have colored pencils at home, bring them with you — ideally a larger set so you have a wide range of shades. The instructor will also have her own pencils available on-site, and those interested will be able to purchase high-quality pencils at a great price.

Advanced participants can bring a reference photo of an animal, or choose one provided by the instructor (cat/dog/horse). It’s also possible to continue working on a piece you've already started and consult the next steps with the instructor.

Notes

Recommended Supplies:

Colored Pencils: Faber-Castell Polychromos
Pencil Extender: For short pencils
Brush: To gently sweep away loose pigment — I use one from Faber-Castell, but a simple shaving brush or the kind hairdressers use to brush off hair works just as well

Erasers:

  • Kneaded eraser (the moldable blue one) — I use the one from Koh-i-noor (it’s the cheapest and I haven’t noticed any difference compared to the more expensive ones)
  • Cretacolor Caramel
  • TOMBOW Mono Zero — precision eraser in a pen-style holder (not strictly necessary, a kneaded eraser can do the job too)
